Common questions
What do I need to run Afterglow?
A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 14.2 or later.
The visualization doesn't move with my music.
Afterglow needs permission to hear your Mac's audio. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, and under System Audio Recording Only, turn Afterglow on. Then click the waveform button in Afterglow's bottom row and choose System audio, or Reconnect input.
Some protected (DRM) audio can't be captured by any app. If one player stays silent, try another.
The controls disappeared.
They hide after a few seconds so you can just watch. Move the pointer over the window, or press H. Help → Afterglow Help lists every control and shortcut.
Can I use a microphone or a turntable?
Yes. Click the waveform button and choose a microphone, USB audio interface or other input. macOS asks once for microphone access.
The picture is ahead of the sound in my Bluetooth headphones.
Turn on Match speaker delay in the audio panel (the waveform button). It holds the picture back by your speakers' delay. It's on by default.
Why does the TV run behind my Mac?
The TV plays a live video stream, which needs a few seconds of buffer: a few seconds with AirPlay, about fifteen with Chromecast. Picture and sound always stay together; only pausing or skipping takes a moment to reach the TV.
My Chromecast or AirPlay TV doesn't appear.
Make sure the Mac and the TV are on the same network. On macOS 15 and later, Afterglow also needs Local Network access: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network → Afterglow.
I don't see HDR highlights.
HDR needs an HDR display, such as an XDR MacBook Pro, and is on only while the Mac is plugged in and not in Low Power Mode. File → Graphics Settings shows whether Low power is on.
